A few of our favorite cross-cultural moments so far:
- A Mercedes stuck in traffic behind one of the many horse-drawn carts in our neighborhood. (Darn Roma and their fodder-hogging sport utility carts!)
- Trying to explain the sights in Prague in German to some Dutch toursts on the plane. Knowing my German I probably toled them Czechs love to throw foreigners out of windows rather than they should see the sight of the famous "defenestration" that started the 30 years war. (Hey, I never said I knew the language well.)
- Trying to translate Buffy on our Bulgarian cable from German to English for Pam. She probably wonders why Angel is leaving Buffy for a turnip. (Ditto)
- Senor Zorba's, a surprisingly good Mexican restaurant run by Americans on the Greek island of Santorini. Music is always Beatles tunes sung in Spanish by traditional Mexican bands. (Dinero, non buy me amore...)
- Loud raunchy gangsta rap music (with much profanity) on the Greek airlines flight. (Things like this are common, sometimes they try WAY too hard to be hip, modern and Western here.)
- The really good Lebanese restaurant in Sofia. (At least we know the goat is fresh.)
- The five Irish pubs in Sofia. (Yes, many of these revolve around food. Bulgarian food is good, mind you, but there's only so many cucumbers a person can eat. Besides, Bulgarian beer is what you'd expect from a country famous for its yogurt.)
- MTV on the big screen at the otherwise very nice Chinese restaurant in Sofia. (You eat all on your plate or you get backstreet boys!)
- Our MTV at home. While it is in English as it's MTV Europe out of London, for some reason all the commercials are in Hebrew. (Wow, the Israelis really do control the media!)
- Watching the British commercial for "Drive-the ultimate road music" a CD featuring such songs and "Luca" and "Manic Monday". Europeans just don't quite get the concept of road music. (Probably because you're in another country before you finish the CD.)
That's all for now, think of us the next time you eat a mad-cow free hamburger!
